TEXT: 1 Chronicles 17 :1 – 15
WHEN GOD REJECTS A GOOD INTENTION.
In today’s lesson God rejects a good Intention from David. Everything about David Is big. In our previous studies on this series he has already brought the ark of the covenant into Jerusalem. Yet his heart is set to do more. king Saul before him was interested in getting more while David wants to give more. ( 1 Samuel 15). Today he declares his intention to build God a house however God will not have this. Nevertheless God has a more beautiful offer for him.
So in verse : he sent for the prophet Nathan and said to him;
Here I am living in a house built of cedar, but the LORD ‘s Covenant Box is kept in a tent!” …“Go and tell my servant David that I say to him, ‘You are not the one to build a temple for me to live in. 1 Chronicles 17:1, 4 GNB.
O how good and pleasant for us to have good intentions and zeal for God’s work. From the scriptures above, intentions no matter how good they seem must align with God’s will for it to be acceptable. This is why a Christian should not be presumptuous. We must seek God’s opinion. If not we might end up offering the sacrifice of fools or offering a profane fire. Invariably, good Intention is not all that matters. There is a place of knowing and doing God’s will and that should be our focus.
In addition it is obvious that David wouldn’t have known the mind of God if he did not involve Prophet Nathan. Here God is instructing us not to come too quickly to conclusion of knowing His Will. We can confide in our Spiritual heads who should also Pray along with us to know for sure what God wants. More so leaders have the warning not to give advice hastily, as every way of a man seems right in his own eyes but not so for God.
Therefore when someone confides with us over a pressing issue, we should consciously take it to God in prayer even after we may have advised rightly. So that we do not unconsciously lead people astray. This is the more reason we should always commit our daily activities to God in prayer.
In conclusion David showed interest to build God a house and ended up getting an everlasting dynasty. God knows the state of our heart toward him. Even though you may not be elected to do something for him now he will definitely bless your grateful heart. For all we have is from him and of his own do we give him. (1 Chronicles 29).
PRAYER: Father for grace to shun every presumptuous spirit but rather in humility seek to do your will above all things through Christ Jesus Amen.
