Text: Hebrews 9:11-22
Theme: No more Sacrifice
There is no more animal sacrifice. Only the sacrifice of Jesus stands today. It is the only sacrifice needed. All that the Jews ever did were but pointers toward the perfect, excellent and complete sacrifice of Jesus which God intended from the very beginning. This does not mean that the old covenant sacrifices were completely useless. They were flawed, yes but they did serve a purpose.
Both the Tabernacle, the sacrifices and the entire duty of the priests were all symbols of the future ministry of Jesus. Moreover the sacrifices were able to provide some measure of purity but this was only external, outward and bodily. The spirit is not touched (vs 13). The conscience is not purged from dead works. They could never permanently change the inner nature of man.
The power of the blood shed by animals were limited. So the entire system of earthly tabernacle and priesthood was a temporary arrangement to point to what was yet to come. God didn’t actually delight in them otherwise he would not have prepared a body for Jesus ( See Hebrews 10: 5-6)
For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant (vs 15). His sinless blood is the only blood efficacious enough to offset the debt of sin committed by Adam which set trouble in motion. His sacrifice was eternal; offered through the holy spirit and Accepted by the father (vs 14) in order to pay the eternal debt.
In other words the Trinity of the God head actively participates in this sacrifice. It is written an eye for an eye. So in the eternal heavenly court of Justice it follows that Adam could not commit sin and put the whole human race under the bondage of sin then ordinary blood of goats and calves will solve the problem. All men likewise are carries of the Adamic nature so even if the holiest of all the priests, prophets and kings that came before Jesus offered themselves on the altar their blood would still achieve nothing.
This is why our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. This is why we have no other argument and need no other plea. It is enough that Jesus died and that he died for us. No wonder in 1John 1:9 he says: if we confess our sins he is Faithful and just to forgive us and his blood cleanses us from all unrighteousness.
The covenant in which we stand today is ratified and sealed with the blood of Jesus. That’s why it’s so powerful. No other blood anywhere can speak of better things than the blood of Jesus and none also can have any bad effect over us because we are standing on a better promise and on a greater pedestal than any other authority. If you are in this covenant therefore blessed are you!
