Text: Psalm 141:1-10
Theme: Guard Your heart
Guard your heart for out of it flows the issue of life says the book of Proverbs. David in today’s Bible passage, pleads with God to guard his heart. In verse 4 he says:
Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil to take part in wicked deeds.
This is a very important prayer for all believers. It’s just like in Jeremiah where we see: the heart is so treacherous and desperately wicked who can know it…but the lord searches the heart and tries the reigns to give everyman according to his work.
For this reason a believer must pray earnestly for God to do something about the state of his hearts. Why does a vibrant man of God suddenly fall into sin? What makes a spirit filled, tongue talking believer to gall into adultery or fornication? It is an issue of the unguarded heart
When we allow everything access into our hearts through the five gateways of the senses we are courting Destruction. The fact that the content of the heart cannot be easily determine by onlookers makes it so treacherous. Many people go about with hearts full of dead men’s bones and all kind of unclean animals. David knew it is beyond him to keep his heart pure so he asks God to help him. The fruit of his lips is an exposure of his heart. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. So, he asks God to keep his lips from speaking guile.
Guarding our hearts is what keeps us focused. It keeps us praying earnestly and unceasingly like David. It keeps out focus on Christ as in verse 8. When our spirits grow faint our guarded hearts will give the courage to go on because we do not allow doubt to rule us. Our hearts will never accept temptation to disobey God by joining forces with evil men.
Dearly beloved serving the lord is actually a function of the disposition of our hearts. If your heart is clean before God you enjoy a sweet relationship with him but if it is still filled with all sorts of trash and wicked animals then it is still unregenerate and cannot serve God. Therefore, cry out to Jesus today for anew heart. An unguarded unregenerate heart will have no honour before God
