Text: 1 Chronicles 21:1 – 19
Theme: Beware of Satan’s Subtlety.
Satan’ subtleties are real we must do well to beware. Have you ever been warned that Satan has asked to sift you? It has happened to me. At the place of prayer and quiet time, the lord dropped this message for me…’the Devil has asked to sift you’. This was the first time I would receive such message.
So after praying concerning it for some days, I forgot all about the message. Exactly two months later the trial began. The most surprising thing is that there is nothing spectacular about the day this problem started. It was just a usual, ordinary day. In fact I was happy and elated. It will take weeks for me to realise that what came glittering with a lot of promises was actually the devil’s trap which God warned me about.
Incidentally, I saw the need to cry as David cried… ‘Lord I have sinned, in your mercy forgive’. Through it, I saw the reason Peter cried out: ‘save me lord I sink! It takes only the grace and mercy of God coupled with our willingness to humbly submit to him at such moments to have victory.
David, the man after God’s heart, could conquer the giants but he couldn’t conquer himself. Self life nearly ended David’s ministry. First was the case of Uriah’s wife. The second time was this occasion of the census.
James rightly warns us about our affections and affiliations. It says in James 1:14
but each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is dragged away and enticed
Note very well those things you desire so much. They may not necessarily be evil in themselves but you have allowed their thoughts to consume you. Beware! That is where the enemy is coming for you. David became obsessed with his achievements. Pride in his heart gave birth to conducting a service that was uncalled for.
Keep in mind therefore, you can’t hide your motive from God. Always remember this. God knows what is in the heart of David. God didn’t command this census yet he carried it out even after Joab spoke up to discourage him
Lesson: Your own back door could be anger, desire for recognition, quest for luxury, quest for intimacy, quest for love and companionship, desire for a better life, job etc etc. Any of these can open the back door for the enemy to attack you.
Remember, Satan is always prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Be not ignorant of his devices. More importantly, whenever you realise that you’ve fallen, do your best to run back to God. Never you run away. Sin may slay you but Jesus will always.. always cleanse you. You may have to suffer some disciplinary measures from the father but it is always best to be home.
