Text: Hebrews 8: 1-13
Theme: A new and Better covenant
Today we continue our Bible study from the book of Hebrews where we left off in March. And we begin to look at the theme: A new and better covenant. The writer of Hebrews had presented Jesus as the priest in the order of Melchizedek. Today he goes further to portray that Jesus is the high priest who sat down at the throne of the majesty in the heavens and serves in the real sanctuary which Moses copied for the children of Israel.
God rightly instituted the old covenant through Moses from Exodus 3 through 20. In Exodus 19: 5-6 He said to Moses: If you obey me fully and keep my covenant out of all the nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. In Exodus 20 the terms of the covenant were laid down. More and more details were given progressively all throughout the first five books of the bible. Leviticus shows us a lot of details pertaining to duty of the priests, the pattern of worship and various observances.
The reading of today tells us that Jesus is the person whom the earthly priests were modelling. His temple is the one Moses copied as shown on mount Sinai to replicate on the earth. Likewise the laws were just a shadow of the real law. It is to us that the reality of the shadow is revealed. We are privileged to live in this dispensation when Jesus has come and brought perfection. Today heaven and earth have met and become one. There is no barrier anymore. Jesus officiates in heaven and through his spirit that lives in us we can participate actively in the fellowship that He presides over.
Therefore, when the new comes the old gives way. Jesus Christ is the initiator of the new covenant. He is the lamb of sacrifice and also the officiating priest. This was God’s plan from the beginning. He worked his eternal purpose through the national Israel to make salvation and redemption available to the whole world.
So what? If you’re still worried about the old covenant, worry no more. Jesus is the perfection of all things. By his holy sacrifice the laws are now written in our hearts and not on stone. He has purged our consciences from dead works. His spirit in us teaches us all we need to know about godliness. This is the new covenant and also the Better Way. Embrace it totally.
