Vengeance and Comfort
The prophesy of Nahum bothers on the vengeance and comfort of God on the Assyrian empire and the Jewish nation, respectively. Recall that Nineveh repented after Jonah’s preaching but backslid to commit worse sins. The comfort of the Jews is that such a troublesome and powerful nation can be destroyed.
Naturally, our focus is so beclouded by the calamity that befalls our enemies, that we forget to draw some personal lesson from it. Instead we begin to rejoice at their downfall. Sadly, that our enemies have fallen does not guarantee our standing before God. If we do not take care we may fall after the punishment of our enemies. God forbid!
Therefore, let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall ” (1 Çorinthians 10:12)
God takes vengeance for he is a jealous God (Exodus 20:5). Hence, those who take his love for granted, should be reminded that His indignation is intolerable. Those who tried his patience in the past found no escape route. We must not venture that blind alley. Nevertheless, as terrible as God’s anger could be, He is slow to anger to those who trust Him for their salvation and protection.
The choice to live in disobedience to God means to hate Him and to make Him an enemy. This position places man a great distance away from God. We must take cognisance of the fact that as part of His righteousness and justice, God will never acquit the wicked of his evil deeds.
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God, for He is a Consuming Fire (Hebrews 12:29).
What is the way of escape? To save man from the ever-burning anger of God, man must repent from his son and seek reconciliation. It is for this purpose that Jesus died on the cross, to make the full payment for our sins. All we need do is to believe on the sacrifice Jesus made for us to be saved from sin and Satan.
The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ, our Lord ” (Romans 6:23)
Note that those who resist bowing to the authority of Jesus as Savior and lord now, will finally bow to Him as judge. The prevalence of wickedness seem to have taken the day. God allows it for now, that men may have an opportunity to make the choices of their destinies; heaven or hell. Judgment will surely uphold. when God pours out the fury of His wrath as of an iron furnace on the earth. We should not wait for this period of great trouble. God in His love sent Jesus that:
WHOSOEVER believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16)
It is expedient for us to access God’s mercy and love before His wrath is revealed.
Let the wicked forsake his way,
And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
Let him return to the Lord,
And He will have mercy on him;
And to our God,
For He will abundantly pardon (Isiah 55:7).
