Nineveh’s Utter Destruction
Nineveh’s Utter Destruction is certain, complete and total. God is not a toothless bulldog. He is the lord strong and mighty. He is patient with sinners but will not condone their excesses forever. God warned Nineveh severally and even in this prophecy, Nahum was still warning them about the impending doom but they called it bluff. Eventually Nineveh’s Utter Destruction came without remedy.
Instead of repenting in dust and ashes, they were proud of their atrocities. So, now the lord has had enough. He is ready for Nineveh. In verses 1 to 4 we see the evil for which the empire is being judged. It is a bloody city filled with deceit, robbery, immorality and sorceries.
Verse 5, Behold I am against you says the lord…
If God be for us who can be against us (Romans 8:31). But now, God himself is against Nineveh, who shall stand for her. It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God. God again reminds Nineveh about the country of No Amon (Thebes) which he used them to Destroy. Thebes was highly fortified and secure, yet very easy for God to overthrow.
He wanted to show them that he can do anything. He goes further in verses 12 to 19 to inform them that even with their mighty army, their fortifications, their leaders, nobles and shepherds they will not be able to do anything against the utter Destruction coming their way. All their defences will be like stubble and their leaders helpless…
This is our warning too. As a family, community o Nation, if we fail to humble ourselves when we sin but rather continue in pride, then we are heading for utter destruction.
1 Peter 5 verse 5 – be clothed with humility for God resist the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Nineveh walked in pride and as a result has the lord against them. How much better to be humble and receive grace. Nations of the world today should learn from God’s utter destruction of Nineveh. Historical evidences abound to this Destruction even today. God made good his word and did as he proclaimed over Nineveh because they obstinately continued in their sin.
Therefore, knowing the wrath of God we persuade men… 2 Corinthians 5:11
Today is yet another opportunity to repent of our pride and sinful atrocities which God is is warning us about and humbly ask for forgiveness and restoration.
