Text: Nahum 2: 1 to 13
Theme: God’s Unstoppable Vengeance
God’s Unstoppable Vengeance is revealed in the bible reading of today. Nineveh the great comes crashing down. When God stands to do battle no one can withstand him. He is a God of justice, love and peace. He rules over all the nations of the earth. Power and might are in his hands. Therefore, no one, no matter how high mighty or powerful can stand on the day of God’s anger and vengeance.
This is a message the world needs to hear again and again. For man seeks to live his life at his own terms, forgetting that God exists. They forget that God owns the universe. He has also given laid down rules and principles for life on earth. Whenever man goes contrary to these rules it means he is courting God’s displeasure and asking for his just recompense.
Nineveh the capital of Assyrians empire is the object of God’s anger in today’s bible passage. Having plundered Istael in the past and taken Samaria captive ( 2Kings I 7: 5-6) he thinks to do the same with Judah. In 2 Chronicles 32 we also see Sennacherib ( one time king of the Assyrians) laying siege against Jerusalem to take it captive but God though the prayers of Hezekiah stopped him. Today was their day of recompense. God decrees:
Behold I am against you…I will burn your chariots in smoke and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth and the voice of your Messengers shall be heard no more’ (verse 13)
It is important to note that God did destroy Nineveh as he promised. It was completely plundered and all it’s numerous wealth taken away. Our lesson here is to desist from provoking God to anger. No man can stand on the day of his fury. He is slow to take vengeance but will not hesitate to do so if he has to. He wishes that all will accept Christ Jesus and be saved from the inevitable wrath to come. But where man fails to avail himself this opportunity, he will have only himself to blame.
In conclusion, the warning in Jeremiah 9:23-24 should guide us:
Thus says the lord let not the wise man glory in his wisdom let not the mighty man glory in his might no let the Rich man glory in his riches but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows me that I am the lord, exercising loving-kindness, judgement and righteousness in the Earth for in these I delight says the lord’.
