Demand for Signs Evidence of Unbelief
The demand for signs is indeed an evidence of Unbelief. This is true because man, though basically a physical being, has the ability to perceive spiritual things too. Man generally operates in the physical. He perceives things through his five senses. These experiences, therefore, form the primary realities in his mind and the basis on which he can explain events. However, there is another subtle component of man which is actually the real man. This is the hidden person of man’s spirit. This part of man is illuminated only by the spirit of God (the word of God).
The Pharisees in verse 38 of today’s reading said to Jesus:
teacher we want to see a sign from you’. Jesus answers ‘no sign will be given you except the sign of the prophet Jonah’.
Why did Jesus reply in this manner? He expects better from the Jews. Moreover, he knows their thoughts. They weren’t interested in any sign but are looking for a way to trap Jesus. In addition, they have received many signs already but choose to ignore them because of their prejudice and hardness of heart. The Jews had all the oracles of God. The promise of the redeemer is plain. They read it every Sabbath in their synagogues. Yet, when the signs were so glaring they missed it because of unbelief. Sadly, they misinterpreted an misunderstood the scriptures. They were more interested in physical salvation by a mighty warrior with a lot of pomp than in a lowly saviour born by a virgin.
Unbelief is the same as disobedience. And disobedience is the same as the sin of witchcraft. Doubting Jesus’ messianic claim remains the greatest error of the Jews. Just as Jonah’s life and prophecy showed, Jesus stays in the grave for three days and nights. ( Note that this is not exactly 72 hours; Part is taken for a whole). This is the sign given to the Jews, yet they stumbled over it and fell.
The lesson here is that we don’t need miracles to believe in God. Rather we must seek to understand what he has reveled in the scriptures. (See Deuteronomy 29:29) When we humbly allow God to guide us into all truth, we have peace. It equips us for right relationship with him based on the foundation of his word. As such we need no miracles to augment our belief. We are satisfied in having a relationship with God as a father through Jesus no matter the challenges we may see in life.
PRAYER: Father, for grace to be satisfied in you and want nothing more.. For strength to live daily in your word and be united with you in purpose. For enablement to establish the fact of your sovereignty over all the earth by being lights and salt wherever we are found and For wisdom to stop looking for signs and wonders, we pray in Jesus name, Amen!
