Text: Hebrews 4:1-13
Theme: True Rest For the People of God
True rest for the people of God is available only in Jesus. God rested from all his work on the seventh day after his creations. He intends to give his Children this kind of rest. This is the rest that ceases from personal work. It is a rest that is possible in the faithful creator who doesn’t want us to work endlessly. When we come to him and express faith in his word; Jesus, we become beneficiaries of his finished work on the cross. Then, we enter his rest.
Verses 2-3 show that this rest was available to the children of Israel but they rejected it through disobedience. Nevertheless, God still reserves this rest for all who believe the good news message of his son.
For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them but the word preached did not profit them being not mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest…
( Heb 4: 2-3a)
Israel entered that land of promise; their focus of rest, yet, rest eluded them. Hence, God announces through David, that there is yet a rest for his people. The rest is available only to the people who accept Jesus and remain obedient to his word. Many today still hear the gospel that Jesus saves yet, refuse to accept it in faith. To such people, there is no rest. But as many as believe in him, he gives power to become his children.
Jesus announces it himself,
come to me all you who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest; Mathew 11:28.
There is no other rest for the people of God except in Jesus. When we come to him and take upon us his yoke of fellowship, we cease from our own efforts. We accept what he’s done and we are made right with God. One who is made right with God is in God’s rest. This rest is full, perfect and complete, so, it lacks nothing and wants nothing more!
Therefore, have you been to Jesus for the enabling power or are you still struggling to be good by your own efforts?/ Do you want rest from all the burden and hassles of life? His word is the place to find rest. Verse 12 says, God’s word is quick and active. it is sharp, discerning the intents of the heart. Embrace his word today. Live it! Love it!! For It is in living his word that you experience rest for your soul
