Theme: HATE VERSUS TRUE LOVE
We live in the days where true love is very hard to find. From today’s passage we find both hate and true love in the following characters:
1. Jesus Christ: He had true love for the disciples. Hence the reason He told them his secret about what will happen to Him in verse 1-2. His visit to Simon the leper was out of true love (verse 6).
2. The Alabaster Box Woman: This woman sacrifices the most expensive ointment on Jesus (verses 7-9). This undoubtedly, expresses the true love she has for Jesus. True love sacrifices all things. Eventually, it earned her a memorial. Therefore, our sacrifices for Jesus shall earn us memorial as well. We will be remembered for the good works we have done.
3. The Chief Priests, the Scribes, and the Elders:These people in addition, hated Jesus so much. The hatred was so great that they wanted him dead (verses 3-5). They were organizing secret meeting of conspiracy against Jesus. To this end, they almost agreed to kill him on the day of feast but feared the possibility of a devastating riot. They planned using subtle means, a character of the devil, to get hold of Jesus (Genesis 3:1). Eve fell for this at garden of Eden and many are still falling for it till today (Genesis 3:13).
4. Judas Iscariot: He has been faking his love (hate) to Jesus. He preferred selling of the ointment and money given to the poor than the anointing of Jesus. Whereas it was to enable a cut for himself as the treasurer (John 12:6). It was on this account of greed and love for money that the devil found him a worthy instrument (verses 14-16).
The church have a lot of ‘Judas’ today. They keep bringing the name of Christ to disrepute. Thereby, putting the church to ridicule because of money. Do not be one of them.
PRAYER: father, Let our deeds and actions prove that we love Jesus and our fellow men at all the time. Help us to avoid anything that will attract devastating consequences. We pray in Jesus name, Amen!
