Scripture text: Mathew 10:1-15.
Theme: Labourers Together for the Gospel
Believers are labourers together for the gospel with Jesus our master and with our fellow believers. In today’s passage Jesus demonstrated what he prayed for in chapter 9. He had prayed in the twelve disciples as co labourers. He commissioned them to the mission field, primarily to preach the gospel. Today, Jesus has made us co labourers just like the apostles. By becoming born again, we have received the mandate to preach the gospel. Our duty is to follow up on every laid down detail
Details of the Mandate
Labourers together for the gospel have been given some certain details to guide their work. This is obvious from Verses 7 to 8,
as you go, preach saying, the kingdom of heaven is at hand, heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons, freely you have received, freely give
These are very important mandates. Consequently, all labourers must crosscheck their activities in the to be sure they are in line with these commands. Sadly, Many preachers have written their own mandates and terms of service. Many are only busy looking for selfish gain. Such persons must know that they are not working for God, but for their belly.
Our aim must be to tell people about God’s kingdom first and foremost. God’s kingdom simply means eternal life and eternal life means knowing Jehovah, the one true God and Jesus Christ whom he has sent (John 17:3).
More so, we mustn’t shy away from praying for the sick and casting out demons as we go forth in our preaching work. These are part of the signs that must follow the believers according to mark 16:17. These signs are not by force as many make it look today because of selfish gains rather it is an offshoot of doing the evangelistic work the right way. When people have been made to recognise the power of Jesus as lord and saviour, his power naturally goes out to heal physical infirmities as he is healing spiritual ones.
father we thank you for the privilege to be labourers together for the gospel with you. May we not make light of this honour. Grant grace to all that are willing to first give their hearts to you so that you can release the compassion needed for working out the gospel mandate. In Jesus name, Amen!
