Text: Mathew 9:1-13
Theme: Jesus Saves and Heals
It is no hidden truth that Jesus saves and heals. He is the saviour of the world. He is also our healer. According to Isaiah 53: 4-5: “he has borne all our infirmities and the chastisement of our peace was upon him, by his stripes we are healed.”
In Mathew 1:21, the angel said to Joseph
and she will bring forth a son and you shall call His name JESUS for he will save his people from their sin
Jesus’ primary goal was to save his people from their sin. All the prophets attest to this, It was the ignorance of the scriptures that made the scribes to question his work.
Jesus demonstrated again in this passage that he is God over everything. He has power to forgive sin and power to heal as well; nothing is beyond him. He healed the paralytic not even because of his own faith but for that of his friends who took the initiative of carrying him on his bed to Jesus. First he offered him spiritual healing before the physical showing that the former is more important and should precede the later.
Jesus further demonstrated his Majesty and power to save over Mathew. At his command, Mathew left his lucrative business and followed him. Today we are reading from the gospel written by this same Mathew. No one is useless in God’s hands even the worst sinner can be useful in his kingdom when converted.
We all fall into the error of the scribes and Pharisee. We judge and condemn people as if that’s what we are called to do. We easily forget that we were once sinners and even as believers we still struggle with sin. It is only God’s love and mercy that got us washed, cleansed and restored.
Human nature seeks to put down another man so that he will feel good about himself. It is self righteousness to condemn others. We must learn from Jesus. He said
I desire mercy not sacrifice (verse 13)
He came to seek the sick not the healthy; the sinners not the righteous. This is also our calling. We must go out to where the unrepentant and unsaved are. We must reach out to them with the word of God in meekness of heart.
