Text: Deuteronomy 18:1-22
Theme: Relevant Laws
The laws outlined in the Bible passage today are still relevant to the church of Jesus though not as a rule but as a guideline, especially, in the area of administration. Verses 1-8 is very explicit on the issue of making adequate provisions for pastors and church workers. Although there is a high level of abuse of this guideline in most churches, our duty as members is to give generously to support the church.
Occultism is a no go area for a child of God. The law against it is still very relevant to us. Today it thrives greatly in our among professing Christians. It is a great shame to the body of Christ. The guideline God is giving here is to avoid any association with people who engage in such (vv 10-12). We must not hide under the excuse of grace to condone murderers in our midst when we can obviously fish them out. Church leaders must remember that they will be held accountable by God over this.
Verses 18-19 talks about the prophet we must hear. That prophet in the similitude of Moses is Jesus. Anyone who refuses to hear him, God will require it from him.
John 3:36, he who believes in the son has everlasting life and he who does not believe the son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.
Prophecies are good but must be checked in line with what this one and true prophet, Jesus had already proclaimed. Any declaration which runs contrary to his teachings in the scriptures should be swiftly jettisoned. We do not keep the law for acceptance but these relevant laws which border on the tenets of our faith remain relevant. Many false prophets have gone abroad today proclaiming their own message, deceiving men. This guideline is a sure guide for us to know who to listen to or not.
