Text: Proverbs 18:14-24
Theme: Peace Making

Peace making is a distinctive characteristic of God’s children. Matt 5:9: “blessed are the peace makers for they shall be called sons of God”. The text gives insight into some causes of discord and easy ways of peace making . Consider Verse 1, “unfriendly people care only about themselves” and verse 24, “a man who must have friends must himself be friendly”. If you want friendship, you mustn’t be selfish. You should be able to overlook wrongs and be conciliatory at the event of disputes.

Verse 19, “an offended friend is harder to win back than a fortified city. Arguments separate friends like a gate locked with bars”.

A friend who is offended feels betrayed, hence, the difficulty in making up with him, yet, wise words satisfy like a good meal; the right words bring satisfaction (v20). Wise words, as we studied yesterday, play much role in peace making. Many people take the loyalty of their friends for granted so they talk to them anyhow. Even the wife/ husband God has given you must be your friend if your marriage will be sweet. Look at verse 21, ‘death and life are in the power of the tongue”. We can kill and make alive with our words. Many  have destroyed all their relationships with thoughtless words. Choose to correct it today.

the poor plead for mercy, the rich answer with insults (verse 23).

In our relationships both with family and friends let us choose to be the poor in spirit who are always aware of their need for God. Always be the first to initiate the peace making process. It gives you peace of mind and beautifies you with the attached blessing.

Pursue peace with all men and holiness without which no man can see the lord. No matter the level of provocation take the first step towards peace making. Make it a habit. God loves it when you do not get tired of doing good. Of course you know devil will try to suggest to you that you are weak for always being conciliatory but in God’s sight we are strong. Yield to the spirit always and shut up all useless suggestions of Satan.
