Text: Deuteronomy: 21:1- 23
Theme: Genuine Honour and Respect for All
God has genuine honour and respects for all he created. He makes this clear in his precepts. All the ills going on in the society today is as a result of the negligence of the laws He has put in place. Genuine honour and respect for all will foster unity, harmony and progress in every social environment.
What are the examples for us to follow in today’s bible text?
1. A case of unsolved murder (v1-9): the principle outlined here explains why people around a scene of murder become the first target of the police for questioning. We must not treat a murder case with levity. God wants us to show respect for every life. We should always remember that we could be in the shoes of the deceased and do all in our power to help unravel the case. So that as verse 9 says we shall put away the guilt of innocent blood from among us.
2. Treatment of women (vv 10-17): it is the society that made women second class in the world. It was never God’s intention. Every man who claims to be born again must have genuine honour and respect for the female folk whether they are related to him or not but particularly, his wife. Today we cases of rape, wife abuse, girl child molestation etc are very common. All these are clear results of disregard for God’ s laws.
3. Accursed of God: (v 18-23) a child who is disobedient exposes himself to public ridicule, shame and condemnation. Jesus was unjustly handed over to the Roman soldiers by the Jewish leaders based on this precept. They demanded the release of a rebellious son in place of Jesus. Why then must we remain accursed? Jesus has taken our place. He did it for us all; the disobedient, unruly and incorrigible. He hung on the tree for us and became the accursed of God. Let us therefore, step into the good life he’s purchased.
For there is no more condemnation now for those who live in union with Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1)
