Text: Mathew 5:38-48
God wants us to imitate him and be perfect just like him. If being perfect wasn’t possible, he wouldn’t demand it from us. We can only become perfect when we become his imitators and aspire to be more like Jesus everyday.
Verses 38 – 42 gives us a clear example of the nature of God he expects to see in us. He doesn’t want us to struggle with people. He is delighted in our ability to give up our rights for the sake of peace. Retaliation even though a natural inclination, is a no-no for us as children of God. God makes his sun shine on both the good and the bad, so he expects us to forgive the unforgivable and love the unlovable.
For he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good and sendeth his rain on the just and unjust (Matt 5:45b)
Now this is not what any man can do by himself. Since our natural hearts are not fashioned to do so, we need help. The first step starts with coming to Jesus for the new birth. By this new birth he deposits the first payment of this inheritance into us in the person of the holy spirit. The more we rely on the holy spirit, the more we become like him. How do we rely on the holy spirit? We acknowledge our inabilities and ask for his help. As we carefully and prayerfully study the scriptures and consistently apply them in our lives in obedience. we progressively become more like Jesus everyday.
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your father in which is in heaven is perfect. (Matt 5:48)
So what? Be imitators of your father in heaven. Forgive wrongs. Give up your rights. Give to him who asks you as long as its in your power to do so. Avoid lawsuits. Love the unlovable. Bless and never curse; only bless no matter the provocation. Determine to be your father’s son this year in every respect. Go out of your way to be a blessing even to strangers, especially those that may never have the opportunity to pay you back. And may the God of peace saturate your heart with his love and enlarge your coast even more through Christ, Amen!
