Many factors constitute hindrances to prayer. Hindrances are obstructions we encounter which prevent an effective flow of a process. Sin is the foremost factor in the list of all the hindrances to effective prayer.
Answers to prayer make us glad and encourage us to come before God again with our requests in confidence. Jesus wants us to approach God in prayer freely and regularly for prayer is basically, an interaction between man and God.
In Mathew 7:7, he says “ask and you shall receive”. In Luke 18: 1-8, he used the story of the persistent widow to illustrate that man must pray without fainting. James 4:2 “…you have not because you ask not”.
It is evident that Jesus wants us to pray as he expects that we receive answers. Why then do we have many unanswered prayers? Why do many people engage in prayer contracts? Why the unwholesome practices today in a bid to secure quicker response from God? Why have we adopted various kinds of prayer formats that negate the teaching of the scriptures. One can only wonder like Paul in Galatians 3:1 “who has bewitched us”.
So many factors contribute hindrances to prayer. The foremost as, mentioned earlier, is sin.
Proverbs 15:8 says the sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination onto God but the prayer of the upright is his delight.
Christians today are so presumptuous for they imagine that we can barge into God’s presence with our filthiness and still have audience with him. Unbelief, doubt, praying amiss (among others) are the rest of the factors contributing hindrances to prayers.
In this series; hindrances to prayer, we shall address this issue as we prayerfully go through them and humbly retrace our steps.
