Text: Galatians 5:13 – 26
For brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
This verse is the summary of the lesson. When we say “Christ has set us free”, some folks misunderstand it to mean we’re free to live just as we please. We are only free to live the law of Christ which is a life of faith lived in the holy spirit made manifest through love for man and God. The whole old testament laws Jesus said is fulfilled in this:
thou shall love the lord thy God…and thy neighbour as thyself”
Verse 16 is clear, for us to live this freedom in Christ Jesus, we must be walking in the spirit. To walk in the spirit, we must first be born again. This first instance of being reborn in the spirit makes us children of God and his nature is given to us through the holy spirit which we receive as a guarantee. Walking in the spirit entails living and growing in the spirit. It means becoming more like Jesus.
Walking in the spirit is contrasted with walking in the flesh from Verses 19 – 23. As we grow daily in the word of God and fellowship with him through prayer we begin to see our lives change from yielding to sinfulness to naturally yielding to righteousness. The spirit begin to bear fruit while the flesh life of the natural man dies successively.
Hence verse 24 is fulfilled
and they that are Christ’ have crucified the flesh…
So, being free means that we are no longer under the impediment of the law where we know what the law states but cannot do it. It simply means that we have received power to refuse sin. Now, we can easily escape its lusts as we fellowship with the father and the son through the indwelling holy spirit on an intentional moment by moment basis.
